Midlands UK Photo Guides

Wednesday 3 December 2008

New guide added but more needed!

I have just added a new location guide to Brown Bailey's Lake on the A57 on the outskirts of Worksop in Nottinghamshire. http://knol.google.com/k/doug-chinnery/a-photographers-guide-to-brown-baileys

This is a site known only to locals and provides some excellent birdlife photography and landscape photography opportunities.

I am keen for excellent photographers from the Midlands area of the UK to get in touch if you feel you can write location guides to build our library. I can provide a pdf of full instructions and it is easy and enjoyable to do. If you would like to write a guide but feel your images may not be quite good enough yet, please still offer to write a guide as we can find other photographers who may be happy to donate the use of their images to illustrate a particular location.

You can contact me at by email . I would really like to hear from you.

Photo Locations Guide Growing Fast

In just the last few days even more areas of the World have been added to the photo locations guide network. More areas of the UK are now covered, Cypress and part of the Med now has an area administrator and California will be coming online soon.
IN the UK Midlands area I hope to have several new contributors wrting and compiling location guides based on their detailled knowledge and experience of photographing their own favorite spots. Watch this space!

Please spread the word amongst your photographer contacts of this resource and we also welcome suggestions on how we can improve the information we are providing.

What area will the Midlands guide cover?

On Lawrence Field II

For the purposes of the UK guide, the Midlands will cover Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Shropshire, Warwickshire, Staffordshire, Birmingham, Derbyshire, Cheshire and Northamptonshire.

Some of these counties, such as my own (Nottinghamshire) are not renowned amongst photographers as yielding the cream of photography locations, but I am confident you will be surprised what treasures they hold.

Of course, counties like Derbyshire, abound with the finest of landscapes - so we have much to contribute to the UK guide.

Welcome to the Midlands - UK Guide to Photography Locations

Welcome to the first post on the Midlands UK guide to photography locations.

This project is part of a world wide effort to provide a free resource to photographers looking for all that information we need as photographers visiting an area new to us.

Started by Brent Pearson in Australia, it aims, ultimately, to become a resource covering the globe using Google's Knols (a unit of knowledge) which were designed specifically to allow an author to publish an authoritative article on a particular topic. These are the fundamental building blocks of the site.

Have you ever travelled to a new location with a view to photographing it, but had to spend ages on the web researching the area to glean information that is pertinent to a photographer? Where to park. What are the access limitations? Where are the best viewpoints? Where does the sun rise in relation to different outlooks? Is there accommodation, toilets or places to eat on site or nearby? Can it be accessed by public transport? What about access for disabled photographers? What time of year is best to visit and so on?

I have. And so when I became aware of this project I immediately volunteered to become administrator for the Midlands region of the UK, where I live.

The project is in it's infancy, but growing fast. Already areas of Australia, Sweden and the UK are being covered with More countries being added all the time.

We are looking for knowledgeable local photographers with good writing and camera skills to write 'knols' on locations they know well, so other photographers can benefit from their in depth understanding of locations and what a photographer needs to make the most of their time there.

No doubt many of the early articles will be written on the most well known and popular locations but as it develops I think the articles will become more and more in depth on an area and reveal little photographed locations full of potential for the keen photographer - amateur and professional.

I am in the process of writing guides for favorite locations of mine in the Midlands and these will be posted soon. Please add us to your Favorites/Bookmarks now so you can use us as a resource for future trips.

So if you would like to become part of the project as a volunteer, please contact us. If you are Midlands based in the UK, please contact me, or if you would like to offer to become a regional administrator for the UK please contact Rob Hudson, the UK country administrator, via his site at http://www.freephotoguidesuk.blogspot.com/
